What are rodents?

Rodents make up the largest order of mammals in the world. They are highly adaptive creatures and can be found living and invading homes and businesses all across the globe. These pests are prolific breeders, are highly adaptive, and will take advantage of any food, water, and shelter source they happen upon. Rodents are most commonly identified by their small, furry bodies and continuously growing front incisors. In order to prevent their incisors from overgrowing, they constantly gnaw on objects, making them destructive pests to have living in any home or business. The most common species of rodents found living in our area are mice, roof rats, and Norway rats.

Are rodents dangerous?

Rodents are dangerous pests, and should be kept out of homes and away from people as much as possible. Rodents spread a large number of diseases and bacteria, which can make people ill. They are responsible for transmitting Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM), salmonellosis, dysentery, Hantavirus, leptospirosis, and more.

Another reason that rodents are considered dangerous when they invade our properties is that they leave trails of urine and feces when traveling from place to place, contaminating the floors, counters, cabinets, drawers, and closets of the homes and businesses with their excrement.

Invading rodents can also cause a lot of structural damage by chewing through structural wood, insulation, drywall, wires, plumbing pipes, flooring, and more.

One last reason to keep rodents out of your home is the many different parasites they can carry on their bodies such as fleas, ticks, and mites.

Why do I have a rodent problem?

Rodents are drawn to properties that offer them easy access to what they need in order to survive on a daily basis: food, water, and shelter.

The following things can attract mice and rats to your property:

  • Garden areas

  • Compost piles

  • Pet food

  • Open containers of garbage

  • Outdoor eating areas

  • Bird seed

  • Bird baths

  • Clogged gutters

  • Wild animal feed

  • Wood piles

  • Dense vegetation

  • Piles of debris

Rodents can enter into homes and other buildings during any time of the year, but they are often motivated to invade in the late fall when the temperatures drop and their food sources become scarce. During this time, they are most likely to seek out an accessible food source and a warm, safe place to spend the colder winter months.

Where are rodents commonly found?

Where a rodent decides to nest or seek shelter is dependent on their species. Roof rats, for instance, nest outside in trees, woodpiles, and in other areas of debris. Inside, roof rats, known for their excellent climbing abilities, nest in the upper levels of buildings such as in attics, above ceilings, or in chimneys.

Norway rats, on the other hand, have dense bodies and are not skilled climbers like their cousins. Once inside, Norway rats nest in basements, behind walls, and in crawl spaces. Outdoors, Norway rats nest inside woodpiles, in the soil under buildings, along riverbanks, and in areas of dense landscaping.

Mice nest outside in tree stumps, in woodpiles, under dense vegetation, in the abandoned nests of birds or other animals, or in burrows in the ground. Inside, mice often nest behind walls, in attic and basement areas, inside crawl spaces, behind appliances, underneath sink areas, and near food sources.
