Protect Yourself from Tick Bites

Ticks are so small and hidden to the human eye that preventing a tick bite may seem next to impossible. However, there are preventative measures you can take to protect yourself and your family if you’re adventuring outside or even playing in the yard.

  • Know Your Surroundings – Ticks can be found in your yard, the woods, or brush piles. Be conscious when you’re outside. After being outside, high heat can kill ticks. Remove your clothing and put it directly in the dryer on high heat to kill loose ticks.
  • Use Permethrin – Products that contain .5% permethrin can help to repel ticks. You can find these products at places like Walmart. Spray the permethrin on clothing, outdoor shoes or camping gear. The permethrin will remain active through several washings.
  • Wear Light Colored Clothing – Light colored clothing makes it much easier to spot ticks on you.
  • Go Long – Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when feasible to minimize the amount of skin that’s exposed.
  • Wear Insect Repellant – Many insect repellants are effective at preventing ticks. A repellant that contains deet is a good option and easy to find.
  • Check Your Furry Friends – We all love to cuddle with our animals, but they can carry ticks in the house after being outside. Give your dog or cat a thorough check for ticks and keep your animals off the couch or bed.

Virginia has a large population of deer ticks, which are notorious for transmitting Lyme disease. Put these suggested practices into place and make sure you soak up all the good that the remainder of summer has to offer!
