Is That a Squirrel Or A Mouse You Hear?

Mice, squirrels and rodents in general are not big fans of the cold, in fact, most start looking for shelter when the first signs of fall. As many of us know the shelter they seek is often times our homes. They sneak in, usually through a crack or crevice, and set up shop in our homes. If you are suddenly hearing the sound of little feet scampering in your walls or ceilings, or have discovered droppings, it’s time to call Triple S’ Pest Control!

Triple S’ is getting calls from concerned homeowners who have been hearing noises coming from their attics and walls and think squirrels have entered their home. In many cases, our pest control technicians have arrived only to find mice rather than squirrels. People are often misled by these two animals because although mice and squirrels are very similar in nature, mice are generally nocturnal creatures while grey squirrels in particular tend to be active during the daytime. Another misleading clue is the sound mice make. These gnawing critters can make enough noise and sound heavy enough to make people think squirrels have invaded.

Mice can carry a wide variety of diseases transmissible to humans. A very real problem with the infestation of mice is the Hantavirus. While the house mouse has not been found to be a carrier of hantavirus, other mice (white-footed and deer mice) have been noted carriers.

The house mouse has a overall gray color. The white footed mouse and deer mouse both have a white underside. The house mouse tail is very little fur on it, the tails of the deer mouse and the white-footed mouse are moderately to well furred and are light underneath and dark on top.

Another major concern is salmonellosis which is transmitted by mice and is a concern in food storage and preparation areas. Salmonella live in the intestinal tracts of humans and other animals, including birds. Salmonella are usually transmitted to humans by eating foods contaminated with animal feces.

Regardless, if you have squirrels running rampant in your attic or have mice on the loose in your walls, it’s time to seek help. Not only do these rodents spread disease, if left unaddressed, they’re capable of causing extensive and costly damage to your home.

Termite and Pest Control Virginia and Maryland

Termites cause over 2 billion dollars in damage each year that is not covered by homeowners insurance. Termites live in the ground and feed off of wood products, cellulose based and moisture in the soil. Termites are continuously foraging 24 hours a day. It doesn’t matter where you live; your home or business is a target for termites.

What kind of termites are found locally in Virginia and Maryland? Are they Drywood Termites or Eastern Subterranean Termites? Are they present year round?

Eastern Subterranean Termites are the most common termites in Virginia and Maryland. If they are swarming in your house in the spring then you most likely have an infestation of this species. Eastern subterranean termites leave MUD and MUD TUBES in their nest and have connections to the soil.

Eastern subterranean worker termites are small in size, about half the size of match-head or 1/8″ long and are soft bodied insects. They have no wings, are sterile, blind and work 24 hours a day for their entire 2 year life span.

Identification of Swarmers and Soldiers: Swarming generally occurs during the spring but occasionally a few smaller swarms may occur during the summer. Swarming most often occurs during the morning following a warm rain shower whereby the soil temperature is around 70°F. However, as mentioned above, just because you don’t actually see the termites working or experience a swarm doesn’t mean they aren’t potentially causing damage to your home.

Termites attack the structure of your home or business from inside the wood. You may not discover you have termites until something gives way. A colony may be made up of several hundred or thousands of termites that will live up to 15 years. On average there are 20 to 40 termite colonies per acre. Termites infest buildings and damage lumber, wood panels, flooring, sheet rock, wall paper, plastics paper products and fabric made of plant fibers. The most serious damage is the loss of structural integrity. Termites could destroy a home within 2 – 3 years.

Hiring a professional pest control and termite company to perform annual inspections, looking for termites is recommended. There could be thousands if not millions of termites attacking your biggest investment, and you don’t even know it.
